[Adam Hart] This may be Tony LaRussa’s way of lobbying for Mark McGwire to be voted into the Hall of Fame, but it appears the latter will be named St. Louis’ hitting coach. It remains to be seen if you will allow hitters to watch video of themselves to make swing adjustments — historically he is not keen on talking about the past.
LaRussa must be positive none of his current players are using performance enhancing drugs, because if they got caught now, McGwire would come under much heavier scrutiny, having returned to “the game.”

[Adam Hart] During the 2009 MLB Season, when the New York Mets totally sucked, there were reports the team’s owners, The Wilpon Family, lost tons of cash in the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme. Reports now say, “Not so fast, my friend.” But I don’t remember getting a Christmas card from said reports.
Via NBCNewYork.com:
Irving Picard, the court-appointed liquidator of Madoff’s ill-gotten gains, made a filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court on October 19th alleging that Mets LP invested $522.7 million in two Madoff accounts and withdrew $570.5 million.
That equates to about $48 million — profit. I supposed The Wilpons wanted to keep that hush-hush, instead of refuting those earlier reports of major losses. Because now it appears that money will be sought after to help repay the true victims of the scandal. It’s not that they pretended to be victims, but that they didn’t not pretend to be victims when people assumed they were. Yes, that makes sense.

[Adam Hart] Word has it that Dodgers left fielder Manny Ramirez hit the showers early in L.A.’s 9th inning loss in Game 4 of the NLCS. After being lifted for a defensive replacement, he went into the clubhouse and hosed himself down. Well, Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports was not appreciative of Manny’s level of respect for such an important game. Dodgers manager Joe Torre defended his slugger.
Via Yahoo! Sports:
“It’s really nothing different than he’s done before,” Torre said. “I don’t think it’s disrespect of anything. He wasn’t going anywhere until the game was over, and we can’t put him back in the game.”
Personally, I don’t see the big deal with Manny hitting the showers early. Maybe I’m numb to it after his antics in Boston. But it was Manny who, in 2007, told the media that if the Red Sox failed to come back and win the ALCS against the Indians, the team would come back and try again next year — no big deal. That moment was pointed to as the turning point in the series, and the Red Sox went on to sweep the Colorado Rockies in the World Series.
The guy is not going to change — 50 game suspension or not. I’ve accepted it. Others, like Passan, have the right to refusal of such acceptance. It’s America, people.
[Adam Hart] The answer determines whether Yankees closer Mariano Rivera is a cheater or victim of a misleading camera angle. Either way, I’ve heard it’s a nasty habit — spitting.
